Hi! I’m Toby and these are my dogs, Maya, Jet and Blue. I am a trail/ultra runner based in Scotland and a UESCA certified running coach. I am also trans.

I set up Queer Runnings because I was tired of feeling like the only queer on the trails and I knew I couldn’t be the only one. Being neuro-divergent and somewhat of an introvert, I set up an entirely virtual run club which has grown into a vibrant and supportive community full of queer running joy!

When I am not running I also enjoy hiking, cold water swimming, ski touring and sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll find me on a bike.

Testimonials

“I joined Queer Runnings club as I wanted to get expertise in training for long-distance trail running and to join a community where I knew I would always feel respected for my evolving queer identity. Toby’s advice has been outstanding, taking great care in providing monthly plans to optimise my fitness and energy for the many races I sign up to. Within a few months, the results were fantastic, with both longer distances achieved and faster times clocked. The monthly training plans come along with daily reminders the day before and I’ve found these invaluable for planning how and where I would run. Toby also provides weekly on-line strength-training sessions and on-line help sessions when needed. But more than the training, I’ve joined a community that shares my passion for the outside and that makes me happy. Queer Runnings is the running club I never knew I needed but always knew I wanted”

  • “I joined Queer Runnings because I had been trying to get into longer distance fell running for a few years, but I didn’t understand how to train properly so kept getting injured. Toby is a super supportive coach, and talked through all of my goals to create a training plan that was manageable, fun, effective and so far injury free! The community in the club is fantastic and though I haven’t managed to meet many other members in person yet, it feels fantastic to be surrounded by other queer runners joyfully taking up space in the outdoors. Joining QR has definitely been a turning point in my running and I’m excited to see where it goes!”

  • “Toby gives completely personalised coaching. I’m having a lot of issues with injury, which has been a long term issue. However since joining Queer Runnings, Toby really makes sure that I’m taking a sensible approach and adjusts sessions as needed.”

  • “Finding Queer Runnings has been such a dream for me. From my very first meeting with Toby where we had an inclusive discussion about what it means to run in the body that I have, to the respect and care he gives to queer trans folks, I feel a motivation for my running I’ve not felt in years. It’s not that I haven’t ran consistently and been motivated to run consistently and been motivated to do it regularly, but I’ve always been a lone wolf. I’ve run alone. I’ve trained alone. And yes, since we are so far spread across the globe I am still doing much of these things ‘alone’, but it also feels so different. My body feels stronger and I know I will become a better, faster runner over time, but my mind and spirit are also stronger too.”
